Collegium International

The Collegium’s main purpose is to produce guidelines for effective action on a global agenda that have ethical integrity and political viability. To that effect, the Collegium is pooling the high ethical standards of its members, their political and scientific wisdom and experience, and their diversity in an effort to provide new and relevant approaches enabling to face the crisis threatning the world and increasingly interdependent global society.
The Collegium has engaged for that purpose in the continuous drafting, editing, publishing and disseminating of a White Book editorial project.

Sao Paolo Conference
6th and 7th of November 2009

On the initiative of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil, and Michel Rocard, former Prime Minister of France, the Collegium International will meet in Sao Paolo on the 6th and 7th of November 2009 and will undertake the drafting of a “Blueprint for World Political Governance”.
Addressed both to governments and to qualified authorities of civil society, this document is intended to open and contribute to the broadest possible debate on this subject. Its objective is to renew the concept of World Governance by initiating an international debate, both intellectual and political, on a subject which is too often reduced to simply the reform (albeit essential) of the UN and the operation of its agencies. In addition, this reflection is occurring at a most favourable historical moment, where the global scope of contemporary challenges, and the mortal dangers they pose, are finally beginning to make their way into human consciousness.

The Collegium is a high-level network where we have the privilege to examine and to juxtapose our great concerns for humanity and for the planet as a whole.

To measure the disorder and the contradictions of our world, to Imagine and propose guidelines at the level of the dangers threatening the equilibrium of the planet, to search for a new sense to give to the human adventure in our day and age: these are the tasks that we chose when we took the initiative to issue our Appeal for the establishment of the International Ethical, Political and Scientific Collegium. By way of its composition, bringing together thinkers and researchers in the areas of philosophy, science and the arts, as well as political leaders with a high level of responsibility, by the quality and the number of the signatories of the Appeal, and the contacts already established with the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the members of the G8, the Collegium should be capable of assuming a mission that becomes more urgent and decisive as time goes by.
The radicalisation of the crisis affecting all aspects of life on our motherland Earth, requires a new alliance between intellectuals and statesmen, to lay out the foundations of a contract to safeguard civilisation, and try to find the replies, for the people of the XXI Century to the three essential question, inspired by E. Kant :

What do we want to do for our planet?
What do we want to do for the human species?
What do we want to do with our lives?
